True Story: How A Brilliant Business Idea Was Saved From Definite Failure

A brilliant business idea is completely useless without a selling system that works. Here is a real life story that illustrates this fact in a very powerful way.

This creative publisher created a beautiful small newsletter packed with lots of interesting articles mostly about strange happenings all over the world and in his locality. At the time (late 1990s) there wasn’t much for young people to read because local newspapers were pretty boring where he lived. Those who read his newsletter were delighted with it.

But he had a major problem. He could not find enough readers to keep his brilliant business afloat. He sold his weekly newsletter at only Kshs 10/-.(US 14 cents.) For the business to be viable he would need to sell substantial volumes and yet he was selling only a few and the word of mouth would take ages to reach more people and lift his sales to any significant level.

And so he decided to print an even smaller miniature edition of his newsletter. It contained the headlines to his articles and a small summary of what the stories were all about. For other articles he just used the headline and the first few sentences of the story. He then distributed these tiny miniature versions of his magazine for free to potential readers. He just didn’t distribute them anywhere. He looked for crowded places where people were waiting for buses and started giving out his free miniaturized copies which had a small line at the bottom telling readers to get their copies of the full version from the person who had given them the free copy. The response was dramatic. Soon he hired people whom he taught his successful selling system. At the peak of this business he was generating more than Kshs 60,000 ($800) a day selling his little newsletter. A number of things later went wrong (mainly because of the carelessness and arrogance that such sudden success brought to this young inexperienced and naive entrepreneur). And then the other thing that happened was that many substandard competitors flooded the market copying his exact selling idea and most of his readers soon lost interest assuming that all his competitors were him and that he had made so much money that he stopped caring about the quality of his stories.

However before that happened, he made a bundle using this amazing selling system. I believe that it can still work fairly well with a few modifications. Can it work for your small business today?
